"I wake to the infernal poundings unnoticed by most,
these soundings.
I have cursed her, avoided her and have hated her ways.
"Try to tame me!" is what she prays. The sea is what she is and "Let
me be" is what she says."
The above is not taken from the "Ancient Mariner" by
Coleridge, but it does have something to do with the sea.
I just received the "Ancyent Marinere" wristwatch by
d.freemont and it does have
something to do with the poem.
Let me describe it first.
The box it arrives in is a blond, perhaps teak, wood
with an inlaid sleeve of green suede. Embroidered on it is the
silhouette of an albatross just above the also embroidered coordinates of
05N/95W. All of this is very nicely done.
The watch is about 38mm in diameter with a thick flat
sapphire. The bezel is etched in a way that represents the drama and
turbulence of the sea .the
As noted in the brochure describing the watch the
d.freemont says that the most pointed connection (here he’s talking about
the connection to the poem) is the inscription inside the back crystal: “
Water, water, everywhere nor any drop to leak .” ( this is a variation of
one of the most known lines in the poem.)
This watch is water resistant to 330ft. with a screw
down crown that has been engineered by d.freemont
The dial is luminescent and its glow can act as a
beacon to all the ships at sea. At the center of the dial is a silver “disc”
with the words “Ancyent Marinere.”
The numerals are large and are black-green in color
like the South Atlantic waters. (I like the black-green color. Depending
on the light available, the numbers could be blue, black or green. Very
interesting choice of color.)
The location of “12” is a “compass like” marking as are
the three, six, and nine.
If you look, you will see a silhouette of the albatross
placed at “one o’clock” near the aspect of the sextant reading for the
equator.
The above noted location of 05N/95W, which is the
watch’s reference number, is engraved on the back bezel.
This watch is beautiful. It has a quality about it and
a story about it that demands that you own one. It is probably the best
quality watch for the price that I have seen for a long time, and it’s a
numbered watch. The watch I have is number 073.
You can own this watch for $450. Yes $450. As you
know, I rarely put the price of a watch in an editorial, or in the magazine
for that matter, but to get this watch for under $1000 is remarkable
enough. And, at a $450 price, it is a steal. If I were d.freemont, I would
increase the price of this numbered watch to somewhere near $1000.
“He went like one that hath been stunned,
And is of sense forlorn:
A sadder and wiser man,
He rose the morrow morn.”
